Struthers: Funeral services will be held 9:15am Saturday at the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell and 10am in Christ Our Savior, St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers for Vern Janecko, 90, who passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning at Briarfield at the Ridge.
Vern was born April 26, 1921 in Campbell, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Salata Barnak.
She was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. She was a U.S. Army veteran having served during WWII with the 3rd Division Air Force in England.
She was employed by Youngstown State University as a secretary in the Placement Office and the university?¢s radio station, WYSU, retiring in 1976.
She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Struthers, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, past Commander of AMVETS Post 34, VFW 3538 and a charter member of the Women?¢s War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Vern loved to read, play cards, travel and enjoyed bowling, crafts and needlework. Her needlework won many awards at the Canfield Fair.
Vern also enjoyed spending the summers at her daughter?¢s cottage in Conneaut.
Her husband William, whom she married Aug. 26, 1948, passed away Sept. 2, 2003.
She will be greatly missed and her memory forever cherished by her son Philip (Kathy) of Canton; a daughter, Betsy of Mineral Ridge; three granddaughters, Danielle (Bradley) Young of Arizona, Allison Janecko of Canton and Kirsten Janecko of Willoughby, many nieces and nephews and her faithful dog Skippy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and four sisters Ann Barnak, Mary Dulkiewicz, Margaret Dulick and Pauline Gonda.
The family would like to thank the staff at Briarfield at the Ridge and the staff and sisters at the Antonine Adult Day Care Center for their compassionate care and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Women?¢s War Memorial, Dept. 560, Washington, DC 20042-0560 or the Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care Center, 2675 N. Lipkey Rd., North Jackson, OH 44451.
The Janecko family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends on Friday evening from 5-8pm.
A military burial will take place at St. John Catholic Cemetery following the Mass of Christian Burial Saturday morning.
