A prayer service will be held at 9:15 AM on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the Kubina Yuhasz Wasko Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 12, 2016 with Fr. Melvin Rusnak celebrating for Thomas Raymond Martinko, 80, who passed away Monday, March 7, 2016.
Thomas was born May 19, 1935 in Youngstown, a son of John and Mary Janci Martinko. He married Georgieann Maruschak on September 6, 1958 and together they enjoyed 57 years of marriage.
Tom was a graduate of Wilson High School and attended Youngstown College. After high school, Tom served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He spent his career as a painter.
Tom spent his life very active in St. Matthias Parish where he painted, remodeled and did janitorial work. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, American Slovak Cultural Association, and volunteered with St. Vincent dePaul Society for 29 years, serving as the President for 8 years. He was a great joke and storyteller, loved the Cleveland Browns and Turner Classic Movies. He liked to travel and was generous with his time, lending a hand to those who needed a handyman.
He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Georgieann and children, Susan (Joseph)Yager of East Liverpool, Donald (Deidre) Martinko of Great Falls, Montana and Sharon Bartlone of Youngstown; his grandchildren, Jessica (David) Wyrick of Minot, North Dakota, Jacqueline Martinko of Boise, Idaho and Justyn Martinko of Great Falls, Montana; his siblings, John Martinko of Boardman, Elizabeth Thomas of Youngstown; his sister-in-law, Agnes Martinko of Maryland, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Leonard and Donald Martinko and sister Lucille Kramer.
The family has entrusted the care of Thomas to the Kubina Yuhasz Wasko Funeral Home where they will receive friends on Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a 3:45 PM prayer service held by the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild. Burial will take place at Lake Park Cemetery where military honors will be rendered.
The Martinko family would like to thank the staff at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Dr. Robert Spratt, Dr. David Hoffman, Shepherd of the Valley, Valerie & Brian at Valley Home Health Care, and Tom's son in law, Joe for their kindness and compassion in his time of need.
