Salvadore A. "Sal" Musitano, 85 CANFIELD – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for Salvadore A. "Sal" Musitano, 85, who passed away in the early morning on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, surrounded by his family. Sal was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Youngstown. A son of Dominic Sr. and Carmel (Rich) Musitano, he was a 1947 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kent State University. Upon graduation from Kent State, he was called to service to fight on the 38th parallel in Korea. Sal was a decorated veteran of the Korean War, where he earned the Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, Combat Badge, Purple Heart, and United Nations Service Medal. Upon returning from his tour of duty, Sal went on to begin his teaching career in the Campbell City School System. In 1957, Sal married Mary Lou Nacarato on April 27, at St. Ann's Church in Brier Hill. While teaching, Sal went on to earn his Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling from Westminster College. In 1961, Sal and Mary Lou were accepted to teach children of the United States Military in Vitry, France. After returning from Europe, Sal continued his teaching career in the Campbell City School System, retiring with 40 years of service. Sal was a member of St. Charles Church, VFW Post No. 1423, Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 137, and a lifetime member of National Education Association, Ohio Education Association, and Mahoning Retired Teachers Association. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; daughter Monica; son-in-law Paul; grandsons Christopher and Alec Hammond; and his brothers, Dominic (Evelyn) of Copley, and Joseph (Kathy) Musitano of Cuyahoga Falls. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Sal was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Carmel. Sal, fondly referred to as "Poppy" by his grandsons, enjoyed attending their activities, especially their sporting events. He was a committed family man, who also cared deeply about the people who surrounded him. Sal will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, as well as his family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Frank Rich, The Northeast Ohio Kidney Group, and CDC of Canfield for always being there for him. The compassion and care given to Sal and family by the ICU, the Sixth Floor Staff at the Boardman St. Elizabeth's Health Center and the Hospice House is deeply appreciated. The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675 or Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512. The Musitano family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive family and friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kubina Yuhasz Wasko Funeral Home on Market Street in Boardman and again Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church, prior to the 11 a.m. funeral Mass.
