Robert Michael Coates, 64
POLAND - Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. at the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church, officiated by Monsignor William Connell, for Robert Michael Coates, 64, who passed away Sunday morning.
Robert was born Sept. 7, 1950, in Cleveland, the son of George M. and Mary Ellen McLaughlin Coates.
He was a 1968 graduate of Chaney High School, where he was a member of the marching band.
Bob went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served for 18 months with the 23rd Infantry Division.
He retired in 2005 from General Motors, Lordstown, where he worked 38 years in the paint department.
He was a member of the Holy Family Church, the Couples Bocce and Pool Leagues at St. Anthony's, and an Officer at St. Anthony's Society in Struthers.
Mike's hobbies were woodworking, golf, skiing, and computers. He and his wife have traveled most of the continental United States and visited many National Parks. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family in Southern California. He was a gentle man and a gentleman. He loved time with his extended family and friends, and his bulldog, Petunia.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, the former Sandra Marie VanOudenhove, whom he married June 16, 1973, in St. Nicholas Church in Struthers; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Cynthia Coates of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother and sisters, Patricia (Jim) Deoring of Salem, M. Elizabeth (James F.) Thomas of San Diego, and George (Nancy) Coates of Springboro; brothers-in-law, Joe (Sissy) VanOudenhove and John (Angie) VanOudenhove; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Joe) Cupp and Diane (Donald) Bucci; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews who loved their "Uncle Mike."
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Ellen.
The Coates family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell and will receive family and friends Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
