Campbell: Funeral services will be held 11:30am Friday in Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church for Peter Spiro Mastrovaselis, 78, whose 20 year struggle with Parkinson?¢s disease finally came to an end Monday evening.
Spiro was born April 13, 1932 in Campbell the son of Giorgios and Kalliope Mastrovaselis of Kalymnos, Greece.
A lifelong resident of Campbell, he fondly recalled the lively, diverse neighborhood around his 11th Street home, where he played street ball and jumped rail cars with his friends and brother John.
As a boy he shined shoes from Wilson Ave. to downtown Youngstown and later boxed at the Pirone A.C. Athletic Club.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, and became a radioman on the ship the Arneb, where he continued his love for boxing and the adventure of sailing. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he worked at the Campbell Sheet and Tube while he earned teaching degrees from Youngstown State University and later his Masters Degree in Education from Westminster College.
In 1957 he was appointed Street Commissioner in the city of Campbell. A 1939 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, Spiro loved the people of the city of Campbell and participated in functions at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox church where he helped coach the GOYA athletic teams.
Spiro contributed 35 fulfilling years of teaching and coaching the youth in the Campbell City Schools and made great friendships with his fellow teachers. In addition to teaching mainly Reading and Special Education, he coached football, basketball, tennis, track and cross-country. Because he never forgot the difficulties of his own childhood, and ââ?¬Å?where he came from쳌, Spiro enjoyed motivating young men who came from challenging circumstance.
Spiro was a sports enthusiast, he especially enjoyed watching track and field events. He spent his whole life surrounded by good family and friends. He enjoyed watching his nieces and nephew grow up and especially his grandsons. He had a great time playing poker and having food parties with his brother and sisters. His empty chair between them can never be filled.
In addition to his wife the former Ioanna Triantafilou, whom he married in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, July 26, 1961, he leaves his children and grandchildren, who will miss him dearly, Christine (John) Schialdone of Lowellville, Colleena Mastrovaselis of New York City, Zambia (Matthew) Jamison of Howland, and George Spiro of Campbell; his four grandsons, Tony, Big Spiro, Little Spiro and Niko and he also leaves many nieces and nephews who he loved as much as his own children. In addition to his children and wife he leaves his brother John (Bertha) Mastrovaselis; Mary (Donald) Barker, Themelina (Nikolas) Ginnis and Martha (Constatinos) Marousis.
Treated like a dear brother, he will also be missed by his wife Ioanna?¢s family, Panorea (George) Kambouris, Maria (Andreas) Vamvakis, Nick (JoAnn) Triantafillou, Kyriaki (Ioannis) Kambourakis, Nitsa Triantafillou, Eleni Triantafillou and Maria Trigoni
