Lowellville: Funeral services will be held 10:30am in St. Lucy Catholic Church in Campbell for Nick (Nicola) Mazzocca, 90 of Villa Marie Rd. in Lowellville, who passed away on Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Nick was born on May 3, 1921 in Bugnara, Italy the son of Francesco and Assunta Iandimarino Mazzocca.
He married Mary (Maria) Gennaro on January 30, 1944, together they shared 60 years of love and devotion until her death on July 26, 2004.
Nick was so proud of his Italian heritage. He was often called the ââ?¬Å?Ambassador to Bugnara쳌 because he maintained so many close relationships with his many Bugnarese friends, both those in Italy and those who immigrated to the United States. His home was always open to visitors from Italy and as a result he was always a welcome guest when he returned to Bugnara.
As a young man Nick served in the Italian Army during World War II as a member of the Alpine Division. As an ââ?¬Å?Alpini쳌 he was stationed in places such as the Brenner Pass, Bolzano, and Orvieto. He loved sharing stories about his military experience with anyone who would listen. Because of Italy?¢s defeat in the war, Nick, like so many of the young men from his hometown, was captured and served 16 months as a prisoner of war in the Bavarian region of Germany. Upon his release, he returned to Italy and made the difficult decision to leave his homeland to pursue the American dream of hope and prosperity. In 1949 accompanied by his brother Joe, and his daughter Assunta (Susan) he left Italy to join is wife in Campbell. He was fortunate to find employment at Cold Metal Products in Youngstown where he worked until his retirement in 1983.
Nick lived in Campbell for many years before moving to Lowellville after the death of his wife 7 years ago.
He was a devoted member of St. Lucy Church, its Men?¢s Society and the St. Lucy Bocce League. He served as an usher at the 9:30am mass for many years. He was a dependable volunteer at most parish fundraising activities. For many years he volunteered with the St. Lucy Caterers as a kitchen helper, bartender and cleanup man. He devoted many hours of service to his church.
As a loyal Bugnarese, Nick was a member and officer of the Bugnarese Society. In 2006 he was honored by San Magno Society of Aliquippa as an Honored Son of Bugnara.
Because he loved keeping active, Nick bowled in the Senior League at the Bowlodrome for many years. He spent countless hours working in the garden. As on who never tired of work, Nick could be seen working for hours in the yard. He never seemed to run out of energy and always kept himself very busy.
Mourning his loss is his daughter, Susan (Attorney John P.) Almasy with whom he made his home; his grandchildren, Paula (John) Seif of Delaware, OH, Jody (Bryan) Schmucker of Kent, Nicole (Chad) Bruggeman of Westerville and Joseph Almasy of Henderson, Nevada. He will also be missed by his great grandchildren, Shauna (Ryan) Taylor of Powell, Dana Strollo, Kayse and Logan Schmucker, his namesake, Nicolas Bruggeman and his new great-great grandson Dominic Taylor. Nick will also be missed by his brother Joseph (Mary), his nieces and nephews and his many friends, especially his friends from the ââ?¬Å?Piazza쳌.
Preceding Nick in death were his parents; his stepmother Nunziata; his loving wife Mary and his brother Lou.
Nick who was known as ââ?¬Å?Pup-Pup쳌 to his family will always be remembered and loved as a devoted husband, an outstanding father, a wonderful and loving grandfather and a faithful brother, uncle and friend.
The Mazzocca family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and receive friends on Sunday from 4-7pm where the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild will conduct a prayer service at 3:45 and on Monday from 10-10:30am, prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy Church.
