VILMA GEEWAX, 84 Campbell - Family visitation, followed by a prayerful remembrance service, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wasko Funeral Home for Vilma Marie Geewax, 84. She passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 12, after a long struggle with declining health.
Formerly of Campbell, Vilma had been living at the Grande Village Retirement Community in Twinsburg, OH .
Vilma was born in Youngstown, the youngest child of John and Anna (Toth) Vass. She attended East High School and, as a young woman, worked at both Strouss' and McKelvey's department stores in downtown Youngstown.
In 1952, she married Stanley Geewax. Together, they built a home in Campbell, where they raised their three children.
Vilma was an active member of St. Elizabeth's parish in Campbell, and was very involved with St. Elizabeth's grade school PTA. When her children got to Campbell Memorial High School, she participated in the Band Mothers' group. When two of her children went off to college, she joined an Ohio State mothers' club.
Many people in the Campbell area will remember her smile and kind words from the 13 years she worked at Plaza Doughnut at the Lincoln Knolls Plaza.
She loved to read, and was a frequent visitor at the Campbell branch library. Vilma always set a great example of citizenship - never missing an opportunity to vote, hang her flag on the front porch and follow the news of the day.
Soft-spoken and humble, Vilma was not one to call attention to herself. But she was someone who made cupcakes for the school bake sales; helped out at church fund raisers; and showed up with a Jello mold whenever her nieces and nephews gathered. And she made wonderful stuffed cabbages for her family.
Six years ago, she moved to Grande Village to be near her son Ronald (Sara), of Twinsburg. Son Darryl, of Newbury Park, CA, and daughter Marilyn Geewax, of Chevy Chase, MD, were frequent visitors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Stanley, who died in 2010. She also was preceded in death by her siblings, Ann Butler, Eleanore Butler and John Vass. Brother-in-law Raymond F. Butler and sister-in-law Mary Vass survive her.
The Geewax family has entrusted their beloved mother to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home, and will receive friends Saturday starting at 11 a.m. At noon, there will be a Catholic service of remembrance, followed by a luncheon.
