YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be Tuesday at noon at the Wasko Funeral Home, with Pastor José Cruz of the First Spanish Baptist Church officiating, for Porfirio Mercado, 86, who died peacefully at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Friday, April 24.
After 63 years of marriage, he has now joined the love of his life, Carmen, who passed away July 30, 2013. Now they are happily together again.
Porfirio was born Sept. 16, 1928, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the son of Maria Mercado and Ramón Planas.
He retired from Youngstown Sheet and Tube after 27 years of service.
Porfirio was a true man of God, who lived a life of service to the Lord and all who were blessed to be in his presence. He was an example of gentleness and love. If all of the world could be like him, we can only imagine the celebration in heaven to welcome him into eternity.
Porfirio leaves to cherish his memories, his children, Ramon (Vicky) Mercado of Coitsville Township, Robert Mercado of Michigan, Antonio (Nilsa) Mercado, also of Michigan, Alfredo (Colleen) Mercado, Evelyn (Estefano) Laboy, and Mary Lou Cortez, all of Youngstown; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Rosie Perez of New York, Alice Mars, also of New York; and his brothers, Belto Mercado and Louis Mercado, both of New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Victor; and his sister, Celia Olivella.
The Mercado family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive family and friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home, prior to the service at noon.
