Obituary

Kathren Novak Chaky, 92 Campbell…….Funeral service will be held 9:30am Wednesday at the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, 405 Robinson Rd. in Campbell for, Kathren Novak Chaky, 92, beloved mother and grandmother, who passed away on Sat. April 12, 2014 at Kindrad Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. Kathren was born, March 25, 1922, in Lumshory, Ukraine (former Slovakia), the daughter of Michael and Maria Langwieser Novak. In June 1940, Kathren married John Chaky (Cakij) of Turia Polina, Ukraine. Kathren and John were married for 41 years until John's passing April 9, 1981. After the birth of their son, Kathren and John escaped from Czechoslovakia and fled to Ellwangen, Germany. Because of the help of John's aunt Julia Tomich, Kathren and John with their two children were able to immigrate from Germany to Campbell, Ohio in 1951. Kathren was a loyal parishioner of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell, where she was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Altar and Rosary Society. In addition to being a founding member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Central School, she volunteered her time by helping with church fundraisers. She was employed by the Moyer Company for 18 years, she retired to Surf Side, SC, were she lived for 15 years. Kathren enjoyed dancing, gardening, traveling and took pride in her embroidering and crocheting skills. She especially enjoyed singing; frequently she entertained her family and friends with her rousing rendition of God Bless American which she would sing at the drop of a hat. She loved her family, her country, her church and her God. Kathren's wit and sense of humor, her shear determination and indomitable will, and her sparkling blue eyes are just a few reasons she will be greatly missed. She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Michael (Nancy) Chaky of Surf Side, SC; daughters, Anna Beckett (Richard Baluck) of Campbell and Mary Szczyglowski of Hollywood, MD; six grandchildren, Michael, Michele, Chris and John Paul Chaky, and Greg and Derek Szczyglowski; and five great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; brothers, Vasil and Peter Novak of Lumshory, Ukraine; and sisters, Helen Bogdon of Melbourne, Australia and Julia Kelman of Uzhorod, Ukraine. The Chaky family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home, 216 Coitsville Rd., Campbell and will receive family and friends on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7pm. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery.
