POLAND – An hour of calling will be held from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Thursday, March 14, 2019, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church for Julian Golis, 91, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on March 10, 2019.
Julian was born September 7th, 1927, in Lowicz, Poland, the son of Piotr and Josephine Golis. During WWII, he was in a forced labor camp in Germany and when he was released, he made his way to Italy to join the Eighth British Army. He enlisted in the second Polish Corps as a Special Forces Commando.
After the war, the commandos were disbanded and Julian found work in the textile industry in England, where he met his wife Maria Stepaniuk. A few years later they were married in Halifax, England at the St. Mary Church in October, 1948. Julian and Maria then immigrated to the US arriving in Boston in 1951, then settling in Youngstown.
Julian attended Youngstown University, and started a career as a roll designer for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company for 30 years. He also worked for PSK Steel. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling to Europe and visiting many countries to visit family and friends.
Julian was a member of the Polish Army Veteran post #4 in Youngstown, as well as the British Royal Legion in Halifax, England. He attended St. Stanislaus church and was a member of the Alliance of Poles.
Julian is survived by his three children Richard Golis, Sonia Niro (Jim Kopanic) and Julie Mayhew, with whom he resided. He leaves three grandchildren, David, Rachel and Kristen Mayhew. He also leaves many relatives in his homeland of Poland.
Julian was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maria of 67 years, a daughter Barbara and a sister, Janina.
Friends may call from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Hospice nurses and aides, who made it possible to keep Julian in his home.
In lieu of flowers, the family request material contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley in Julian's name.
