John George
Mastrovaselis
Mar 4, 1931 — Mar 4, 2015
John George Mastrovaselis, 84 CAMPBELL – Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church for John George Mastrovaselis, who died from complications from cancer on his 84th birthday. Born March 4, 1931, in Campbell, to Giorgios and Kalliope Mastrovaselis of Kalymnos, Greece, John's life was defined by his love for life and family. Fiercely loyal to family and friends, an unwavering fan for those he loved, you could count on him to attend every event where he could show his pride and support. Famous for his booming voice, you could pinpoint John in stands filled with thousands, as he cheered on his beloved Campbell Red Devils. Living the motto that good things are always better when shared, John will be remembered by many whose lives were enriched by his desire to share his love for archery, judo, boxing, chess and every game of skill. Universally known as "Uncle John," he was well-known for piling as many kids into his car as could fit, going to the archery range, ice skating, roller skating, movies, games or whatever excursion would put a smile on their face. John was a father figure to many, investing his time into the lives around him. John loved the Navy and enlisted during the Korean War, becoming a Radarman on the USS Silverstein Destroyer Escort (DE) 534; the most fired upon ship in the Korean War. A decorated serviceman, John was honorably discharged in 1955, after losing his kidney onboard ship. John returned to Campbell and retired from the Youngstown Sheet and Tube at the age of 48. Patriotic and profoundly proud of his Greek and American heritage, he loved his country and had admiration and gratitude for his fellow servicemen, especially family and friends that also served. John volunteered his service to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the VFW, participating for a time as chaplain for the DAV, placing flags on the graves of the fallen, visiting servicemen in hospitals and nursing homes, and volunteering for VFW fund raising events. John had numerous friends in all walks of life from the Greek kids he grew up with on 11th Street, to the service organizations he volunteered with. He enjoyed his monthly coffee meetings with his Campbell Memorial graduating class, traveled annually to the reunions of his USS Silverstein shipmates, and deeply mourned the loss of his brother and best friend, Pete Mastrovaselis, in 2011. Doted on by his sisters, Mary, Thelma and Martha, he could be regularly found in their kitchens eating all of his favorite foods, playing cards and scrabble. John married his high school sweetheart, Bertha Magriplis, who passed away in 1960. John is survived by his beloved, long-time companion and partner-in-crime, Patty Fraile; and three generations of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who will all miss him dearly. His children, Jennie White, Caliope (Opie) and George (Pam) Mastrovaselis reside in Orange Park, Fla., and Debbie Fulton and Jeffrey Miller reside in the Youngstown area. John leaves behind grandchildren Katina (Jack) Cahill, Nicole (Tyke) Dacuyan, Christina (James) Squires, Amanda (Stephen) Taylor, Melissa White, Dan and Michael (Marissa) Czombas, Becky Nelson, Amanda Miller, Dana Mathis, and Lisa, Jarred, Kaziah, Gunner and Shirley Miller, and 17 great grandchildren. John was also dearly loved by his many nieces and nephews who he loved as much as his own children. Whenever anyone told him that they loved him, he got the last word in always, responding with "I love you more." As he took his final breath, those were his last words. In addition to his children, he leaves his sisters, Mary (Donald) Barker, Themelina (Nikolas) Ginnis and Martha (Constatinos) Marousis. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Sakellarios (Charles) and Peter (Ioanna) Mastrovaselis; and beloved godfather Triantafillos, who helped raise and guide him in his youth. The Mastrovaselis family would like to thank Heritage Manor for the excellent care given to John near the end of his life. The Mastrovaselis family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and again on Tuesday morning from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the church.
