John went to grade school in Lincoln Hill, then to Trinity High in Washington, where he graduated in May of 1949. John began working at age 9 on Prigg's Farm and worked there until age 17. At age 10, his family changed their surname to Mangin. Upon his graduation, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Moale (DD-693) for 45 months during the Korean War. After being discharged from the Navy in May of 1954, he went to work at Pennsylvania Transformer. John married his wife, the former Helen L. Shannon, of Houston, Pa., on Dec. 4, 1954. John's new job at United Engineering & Foundry moved him and Helen to Youngstown in 1956. Together they had three children, J. Gregory of Struthers, Renee (Dave) Tucci of Canfield and Ralph of Belleville, Mich. Upon retiring from United Engineering (Wean United), he worked for Glunt Machine in Warren. He loved to play golf from a young adult. He was in many leagues around the area and had two holes in one at Mill Creek and Lakeside golf courses. He was a member of St. Dominic's Church. John was a fix-it man and kept very busy, he loved to go to the YMCA and was a life member of the VFW post No. 3538 in Struthers, American Legion, Moose Lodge of East Palestine, and a member of the S.N.P.J. in Enon Valley, Pa. He enjoyed playing shuffleboard, bocce, and darts. John liked Italian music, camping, casinos, horse racing, vegetable gardening and attending USS Moale reunions. He loved the Youngstown State University Penguins, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, even attending the 1960 World Series. He enjoyed traveling back home to Blackwater Falls, W.Va. yearly, and once took the family on a ten-week trip touring the country with a camping trailer. John enjoyed making sauce for Sunday spaghetti dinners, but most of all he loved his children and grandchildren who always brought a smile to Pap's face and a sparkle to his eye. Besides his loving wife and three children, he leaves his two grandchildren, Lianna Tucci and Gina Tucci; brother Jimmy (Dale) Mangin; and three sisters, Eleanor Ruffolo, Rita (Bobby) Marra and Monie Dietz. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law Sonny, Joe, Garrol, John and Frank. John wanted everyone to remember him as he was. He requested private services and burial which took place at Lake Park Cemetery where military honors were rendered. The family requests that any material contributions be made to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland OH 44514, in John's memory.
