Campbell…Private funeral services were officiated by Pastor Steve Varga on Tuesday at the Wasko Funeral Home for Helena N. Auguston, 93, who passed away Saturday with her grandson and son-in-law by her side.
Helena was born July 7, 1920, in Youngstown, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Kolovakos) Nicholas.
She was a lifelong area resident and attended Youngstown East High School.
Helena was a housewife and also worked at the Ravenna Arsenal, Republic Steel, and Copperweld Steel during World War II.
She was active in many civic organizations, once serving as President and Secretary of the Happy-Go-Lucky Senior Citizens Club, as well as the Tour Director for their group tours. She also served as the President and Treasurer of the Campbell Friends of the Library and was instrumental in creating the Friends of the Library Cook Book. She was also a member of the 1418 Seniors Citizens Group.
Helena leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Judith (James) Jones of Jacksonville, Fla.; her son-in-law James J. Vargo of Campbell; her sisters, Dolly Morse of Neveda and Tula (Harry) Kantarze of Arizona; her brother, George (Barb) Nicholas of Hubbard; her grandchildren, Vicki Lynn (James) Scott, James G. Vargo, and Robert Gazel Jones; her great-grandchildren, Rachel Scott, Nicholas Scott and Gabriel Jones; and many nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Gazel "Casey" Auguston, whom she married October 29, 1937, passed away April 28, 1983.
Besides her husband, Helena was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Kathryn C. Vargo; her sisters, Mary Vanasky, Stella Nicholas, Bessie Nicholas Goldie New, and Artemis Nicholas.
The Auguston family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home.
