Helen and Carl were married Aug. 3, 1946, and they had six children, Joann (Roy) Morsch of Starlight, Pa., Ronald who was killed in action in Vietnam, Carl W. (Luann) Puskarcik of Sylva, N.C., Kenny who died at two days old, Sandra Puskarcik (Dave McKee) of Dublin and Denise Burris (Thomas Peluso) of Campbell.
"Grandma" loved her five grandchildren, Ronald Burris (Mary) and Karla Burris (Anthony Strotman), Ryan, Kristen and Kyle McKee. Helen also leaves behind her beloved brother and dear friend, George Dubaj of Cuyahoga Falls.
Helen who was born April 16, 1927, was the daughter of Joseph and Ann Baballa Dubaj, her parents immigrated from Helpa, Czechoslovakia.
She was a lifelong resident of Campbell and attended Campbell Memorial High School.
Helen was a Gold Star Mother and attended the City of Campbell's Memorial Day Service every year. She embraced the recognition given to her fallen son, Ronald, and she appreciated that the local veterans always included her in the ceremony. Always the patriot, she worked at Pilgrims factory during World War II. "Mom" took center stage in her husband's, children's and grandchildren's lives. She was the rock of the family, nurse, teacher, consoler, supporter, motivator, cheerleader, champion. And at pivotal times in their lives she helped them become ethical, able, resilient and moral contributors.
As a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and "honorary mom" to her nieces, nephews and children's friends, Helen was the consummate nurturer. Everyone felt at home at "Mrs. P.'s" kitchen table, she was the "community guidance counselor."
When her husband worked at Sheet and Tube and her children were in school, she always had dinner on the table by 5 pm, which was a cherished family gathering time. Respecting and sharing tradition and religion were Helen's hallmark. She kept the family's Polish and Slovak culture at the forefront by having all children attend St. Joseph the Provider Polish Catholic Church and School, taking all five children to Polish dance lessons and performances, and teaching the traditions, culture and recipes of holiday meals, especially the blessed Wigilia, the traditional Christmas Eve supper in Poland.
Helen loved holidays. Her home was decorated for every occasion and she especially loved Christmas. She baked and cooked for weeks in advance and always had more than enough food to feed family and friends. She loved soothing the appetites and hearts of family and friends through her kind words, gentle smile and warm embrace.
Helen enjoyed bowling, playing cards, classic movies, puzzles and she loved all things purple. Helen dedicated much of her time to St. Joseph the Provider Church. She was a member of the 300 Club, Infant Guild and the Altar Rosary Society. She also was a proud "Pierogi Lady" for many years.
Preceding her in death were her two brothers, Joseph Dubaj and Stephan Dubaj; and five sisters, Rose Mitulinski, Mary Horvath, Ann Kobachenski, Barbara Horvath and Pauline Conners.
Memorial contributions can be directly to Christ the Good Shephard Parish at St. Joseph the Provider Church in Campbell.
A special thank you to granddaughter Karla Burris and Anthony Strotman for being caregivers the past months.
"Some blessings last for a short time, but some are called 'mothers' and enrich all our lives even after they are gone."
