Obituary

George T. Passas, 98 CAMPBELL - Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at  10 a.m. at the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell for George T. Passas, 98, who passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016. A son of Phillip and Irene (Kapsulis) Passas, he was born in Marsailles, France on Jan. 20, 1918. He was taken to Kalymnos, Greece as an infant. George, as a teenager on the island of Kalymnos, known as Sacred Rock, quit school to work and help support six siblings, his parents and three grandparents. As a young man, he labored as a fisherman, agricultural worker, and sponge diver, from 1937 to 1951. The Naked Divers, as they were often called, submerged into deep and cold waters of the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea without compressed air. These divers contracted themselves from six to eight months away from home. George immigrated alone to the United States to Campbell in 1952. The voyage by boat lasted 16 days. In 1954, he booked passage for his wife, Irene, and three sons, Phillip, Michael and Gus. To provide for his family, George was hired to work at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube, Seamless Hot Mill from 1952 to 1981. As a proud Greek and American citizen, he focused on raising and educating his children, Phillip, Michael, Gus and Sofia. Furthermore, as a Greek Orthodox, he enthusiastically began serving his church as a parish council member. Also, George was a member and eventually president of his benevolent Kalymnian Society, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Greek culture. He was preceded in death by his loving and caring wife, Irene (Kambouris) Passas; sister Nikki Kossaris; father and mother Phillip and Irene (Kapsulis) Passas; grandfather George Kapsulis; grandmother Nikki (Koukouvas) Kapsulis; and brother-in-law Theofilos Buolifantis. George is survived by his sons, Phillip G. Passas and wife Sylvia, Michael Passas and wife Claire, and Gus Passas and wife Arlene; daughter Sofia Marian and husband Daniel; grandchildren George Passas and wife Jessica, Renee (Passas) Knepper and husband Derek, Rena (Passas) Shak and husband Greg, GeorgeMichael and Alexander Passas, Daniel (fiancée Tiffany DeAugustine) and Christopher Marian; brothers and sisters Gus Passas and wife Maria of Kalymnos, Maria (Passas) Atsas and husband Sakellorios of Campbell, Katerina (Passas) Boulifantis of Kalymnos, and Kaliope (Passas) Glinatsis and husband Skevos of Sydney, Australia; and brother-in-law Anastasios Kossari of Sydney. Family requests memorial contributions be made to the Restoration Fund of Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, 401 12th St., Campbell, OH 44405; or to the Kalymnian Prodromos Society 165 12th St., Campbell, OH 44405.
