CAMPBELL: Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell, for George Constantine Marantis, 77, of Struthers, who passed away Monday morning, July 18, 2011, at Hospice House following a courageous battle with cancer.
George was born Oct. 12, 1933, in Manhatan, N.Y. , the son of Constantine and Eftyhia (Boukos) Marantis.He graduated with honors from George Washington High School in New York, never missed a day of school in 16 years and was president of his junior and senior class. George received a football scholarship to Boston University, but put his college career on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served his country for four years during the Korean War as a medic and got his pilot?¢s license. He was stationed on Johnston Island and was honorably discharged in 1956.
Following his years of service, he went to Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey and received a bachelor of science in biology. He was a licensed realtor and ran his own company for several years in New York City. Over the years, he worked for Allergan Pharmaceuticals and owned and operated several industrial painting businesses, including Alpha Painting, Continental Painting and Marantis Enterprises .
He retired in 1995.He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and over the years was a Boy Scout leader, served as president of the Little Red Devils Football League and sponsored local youth baseball teams. During his lifetime, George was very active and enjoyed adventurous activities, including horseback riding, snow skiing, snorkeling, acrobatics, scuba diving and piloting planes. In recent years, he most enjoyed spending time with his loving wife, children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed movies, swimming, traveling and working on the computer.
George was famous for his ââ?¬Å?Georgeisms,쳌 where he coined a variety of comical words and phrases. During his life and throughout his illness, George never complained and maintained a positive attitude and sense of humor. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
George was a perfect example of what a husband, Baba and Papou should be. Words cannot express the love, pride and respect we have for him. It was an honor to be a part of his life. We thank him for always being there for us and loving us as we have loved him, unconditionally. May he always know how much he has touched our lives and how truly important he was to us. We love him more than anyone will ever know. May he go with God and eternally rest in peace.
George leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Ana ( Frazis), whom he married Oct. 4, 1964; two daughters, Angelique (John) Avdellas of Beaver, Pa., and Alexis (Matthew) McAleer of Poland; two sons, Michael (Jackie) Marantis of Poland, and Dean (Kim) Marantis of Poland; 11 grandchildren, Georgie, Peter, Ana and Eleni Avdellas, Christian and Mia Marantis, Giana McAleer and Nicholas McAleer, and George, Adriana and Zachary Marantis; a sister, Maria (Michael) Vaporis of North Carolina, a brother, Zachary (Cleo) Marantis of Harrison, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The Marantis family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home and on Friday morning from 9:30-10:30am at the Church.
