CAMPBELL: Gabriel S. ââ?¬Å?Gabe쳌 Makatura, 58, died Wednesday at Beeghly Oaks after a courageous two-year battle with cancer Born July 6, 1952 in Youngstown, he was the oldest son of Joseph G. and Rita A. Borich Makatura. He graduated in 1970 from Campbell Memorial High School and studied speech and broadcasting for three years at Youngstown State University. His masterful appreciation for contemporary music led him to a career in radio broadcasting and he spent many years working for radio stations in this area including WFAR, WGFT, WPIC, WFUN, WRRO, WNIO, WNCD WRKU, WYSU and WKBN. He also worked as music and program director for WPFB-FM ââ?¬Å?Rebel 105.9 FM쳌 in Dayton. His listeners knew him as ââ?¬Å?Gabe Stevens and His Magic Bus쳌 and as ââ?¬Å?Maxwood.쳌 He had also volunteered for the Youngstown Radio Reading Service for the Blind. For a time, he worked regionally for Huffy Bikes and did professional furniture refinishing. He also had worked for Stanley Steemer. Most recently and, prior to his illness, he worked for AT&T in Boardman. Besides his mother, he leaves to cherish his memory one sister, Mary (John) Grzebieniak of New Castle, Pa., and four brothers, Timothy (Lorraine) of Pittsburgh, Mark at home, Joseph (Julie) of Denver, Colorado, and Gregory of Cleveland, as well as several nieces and nephews and many faithful friends who were there for him throughout his illness. He was preceded in death by his father and by twin sisters, Anna Marie and Katherine Ann who died at birth. The Makatura family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Saturday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Services will follow at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. John Trimbur officiating.
