Eleanor Rita Gardner, 89
YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., at the Wasko Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, for Eleanor Rita Gardner, 89, who passed away Sunday morning.
Eleanor was born June 25, 1926, in Campbell, the daughter of John and Veronica Filip Hovanec.
She was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and a lifelong area resident. Eleanor worked as a library clerk in the Struthers Library and Brownlee Woods Library from 1972 to 1989. She was a member of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Eleanor was the organist at St. Elizabeth Church, dating back to her time as a little girl at St. Elizabeth School. She instilled the love of music in children, her grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Her husband, Robert Gardner, whom she married May 24, 1949, passed away July 6, 2000.
Eleanor leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Barbara Guappone of Tallmadge, Katie Gardner of Oviedo, Fla. and John (Margie) Gardner of Boardman; grandchildren Kristen Guappone, David (Amy) Guappone and Brian Guappone, Kerrie (Jason) Frease, Dustin (Valerie) Gardner and Joshua Gardner, Beth (Jay) Sanchez and Robert Banyas; and great-grandchildren, Michael and Paul Guappone, Monroe and Lilah Frease, Reese Gardner, Billy and Zach Hagan and Ian Sanchez.
Besides her husband, Robert and her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her son, Robert; her sister, Mary Kucab; and her brothers, John Hovanec and Henry (Red) Hovanec.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Eleanor's name to Akron General Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, OH 44333.
The Gardner family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive family and friends Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
