Donna V.
Szilagy
May 7, 1925 — Dec 1, 2013
Struthers…Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Community Church in Campbell, with Pastor Dan Yargo officiating for Donna (Danica) Viola Szilagy, 87, beloved wife and mother, who departed this life on Saturday, December 1, at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers. A lifelong Campbell native, Donna was born May 7, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of Vasil and Antonia (Pavlic) Lazich. Donna was a 1943 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Following high school, Donna soon began work in the Seamless Finishing Department, Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company. During this time she met Michael Szilagy, whom she married in 1945 when he returned from military service. A natural born musician, Donna learned at an early age to love the music that her mother, Antonia, and her father, Vasil, made a part of their everyday life. She enjoyed a lifetime of involvement with the tambura culture that began with her father Vasil's early involvement playing the tamburitza and the mandolin. An accomplished tamburitza player, playing both the Prim and the Brac instruments, Donna was a member of the Od Srca (Happy Hearts) Tamburitzans of Youngstown. Od Srca enjoyed wide recognition, performing at Croatian picnics, events, and concerts not only in and around Youngstown, but throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Donna was also a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union and the Croatia American Association. She leaves three children, Marcia, Michael (Debbie) and David (Darlene), six grandchildren, Evan, Erin, Ian, Stephen, Michael and Sarah, and three great-grandchildren, Mia, Maria and Maximus. Besides her parents, Antonia and Vasil Lazich, Donna is preceded in death by five brothers, Daniel, Victor, George, Milan, and Robert, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Graban and Mrs. Betty Luther. Michael Szilagy, Donna's husband of 46 years, also preceded her in death in 1992. The Szilagy family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home and again on Monday from 10-11:00 a.m. at Christ Community Church.
