Obituary

Cyril A. "Spike" Balas, 91 Poland…Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Wasko Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Poland, officiated by Monsignor William Connell, for Cyril A. "Spike" Balas, 91, who passed away Sunday morning. Cy was born October 3, 1923, in Youngstown, the son of Andrew and Mary Drenchak Balas, Sr. and grew up on Tyndale Avenue in Youngstown. Cy was a 1943 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and then graduated from Youngstown College in 1951, with a Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for 60 years. Cy was employed by the Lombard Corporation, Machine Design Service, Inc. and finally as an independent contractor for many years until his retirement in 2011 at the age of 88. Cy served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and was discharged as a Private First Class in the Army Air Force Unit. He was an avid and active bowler and golfer, participating in many area leagues until his 90th birthday and was a talented artist and craftsman. He was a member of Holy Family Church in Poland. Cy will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Besides his wife, the former Gladys Wasko, whom he married April 7, 1951, he leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Kathleen (Leo) Lucisano of Cary, NC; three grandchildren, Leo Cyril Lucisano of Chicago, Julianna Lucisano of Portland, Oregon, and Michael Lucisano of Raleigh; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and other family and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ann Vaughn and Helen Clifford; and five brothers, Andrew Jr., Frank, William, Eugene and Leonard Balas.
