Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN –A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church officiated by Father Martin Celuch, for Catherine Yanek, 95, who went to be with the Lord. Catherine was born May 19, 1918, in Czeckoslovakia, and moved to the United States in 1929. She is the daughter of John and Catherine Olenick Kovach. She was a very active member of her church which included Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, St. Matthias Golden Echoes Senior Society, Slovak Catholic Sokols WR 54, Jednota Lodge 731, Infant Jesus of Prague, Altar & Rosary Society and belonged to the Lansingville Ladies Political Club. She was an avid bowler and golfer, and enjoyed knitting, cooking, baking, and working in her flower garden. Catherine leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Jerome (Nellie) Yanek of Chicago, IL, Kathleen (Mike) Drummond of Canfield; two brothers, Frank (Anne) Kovach and Cyril (Mary) Kovach of Youngstown, four sisters, Mary Minear of Litchfield, OH, Cecelia Ferenchak of Boardman, Josephine Salata of New Middletown, and Agnes Kovach of Youngstown; four grandchildren, Jay (Gail) Yanek of Katy, TX, Tina (Tim) Krull of Chicago, IL, Candace (Tom) Shives of Atlanta, GA, and Robert Cole of Pensacola, FL, and five great grandchildren. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Felix J. Yanek, whom she married October 5, 1940; her sister Regina Kovach, and three brothers, John Kovach, George Kovach, and Joseph Kovach. The Yanek family has entrusted the care of their loved one to the Kubina-Yuhasz-Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church on Saturday, February 22, 2014, with a prayer service being held by the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild at 8:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Sokols Scholarship Fund in memory of Catherine.
