Obituary

Villa Maria, Pa: A memorial Mass will be held at the Magnificat Chapel, Villa Maria, PA 16155 on Saturday, April 9th at 1:00 PM for Ann Matvey, 93, who passed away March 19, 2011, after a short illness. Ann grew up in Campbell, OH and graduated from Campbell Memorial High School in 1935. She lived in the Akron area for 50 years and was a member of St. Vincent Catholic Church. Through the years she volunteered at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, Support, Fish and the Salvation Army. Ann instilled a wonderful philosophy of giving to others and empathy for those in need. She was the core of the family and loved telling stories and sharing her Slovak heritage with her grandchildren. For the past 13 years she lived at the Villa Maria senior residences operated by the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. Ann loved hosting annual family reunions at Oglebay Park, playing cards and Rummikub. Her many artistic talents included drawing, knitting, sewing, decorating and she enjoyed anything fancy. Ann was also known for her spunk and sense of humor. Ann is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Macala (Campbell, OH); children, Nancy Thomas (Bradenton, FL); Janice (Denny) Woods (Bradenton, FL); Paul (Mentor, OH); Denise (George) Dieter (Alexandria, VA); daughter-in-law, Barb (Stow, OH); 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and all her friends at Villa Maria. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul; son, Rick; and sister, Lennie Spak. The family thanks the caring, compassionate staff at Jameson Hospice.
