YOUNGSTOWN – An hour of calling with be held from 9:00 AM to 9:50 AM followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Father John Jerek, at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 21, 2016 at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church for Andrew Kolar, 92, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 16, 2016.
Andrew was born the son of Andrew and Anna Kolar on August 31, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan. Upon graduating from high school in Detroit, Andy joined the United States Navy and served at various bases and on ships. He graduated from the U.S. Submarine School in New London, Connecticut and concluded his service of over three years in the Pacific Theater.
He studied at the University of Detroit, and graduated from Macomb Community College and earned a B.S. from Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.
Andy was employed for over thirty years with the Detroit Fire Department, and pursued a hobby of music with the bands of his uncles, the well-known brothers, Bill, John and Andy Zelenak.
Upon retirement, he moved to Youngstown with his wife Dolores J. (Hamracek) whom he married on June 6, 1964.
Nominated to the board of Youngstown State 60+ Group, and a member of the Institute of Learning in Retirement, he served over seven years. His hobby of walking resulted in another office with the IN-STEP Program at the Southern Park Mall sponsored by ONE-STEP FURTHER PHYSICAL THERAPHY, INC..
Andy is survived by his loving wife Dolores; his sister Marge Addesso and many nieces and nephews.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe and Val and a sister Mary Ament.
The family has entrusted Andy's care to the Kubina-Yuhasz-Wasko Funeral Home, where they will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 20, 2016.
Andy's family would like thank the staff of Sunrise Assisted Living and Shepherd of the Valley for their compassionate care of Andy in his time of need.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, material contributions be made to Our Lady of Sorrows at St. Matthias Parish in Andy's name.
